Thank you for the response. We agree that the past is the past and best left to historians. Whether you love or hate HP depends when in the past your bought. Those of us who bought in 1992 are extremely happy. I understand those of you who bought in the last year and half are not.

IMO one of the reasons for the poor recent performance is HP investment in projects that are not near term. The merced chip, digital photograph and verifone took a tremendous amount of money and corporate energy. The payback is still years away. We will know if the investments were worth it starting in 1999 with the introduction of HP merced machines. I do not have a crystal ball when it comes to the future. Therefore, I speak only for myself. HP has taken bet on future projects to spur growth. I believe that those projects will bear fruit i.e. profits. But why I believe this comes down to my trust of the management. I think they are extremely capable. I agree with the short term sacrifice for a long term return philosophy.

Am I right? I do not know. I am sure someone will tell me in 1999. Short term anything can happen. I am not bullish for technology over the next 3-6 months. But after that......
