Steven, I have to disagree with the view that losses or gains not taken aren't real, and are only "on paper." Let's say you buy a stock at $50 which then falls to $40. Have you lost $10 per share if you haven't yet sold? Of course you have! The best indication of what something is worth is what it sells for in the marketplace. If you can buy all the shares you want at $40, it's a fantasy to think their value is anything more. At this point what you paid for the stock is irrelevant to it's valuation. By not selling you don't change the fact that you've suffered a loss.
