John, I haven't investigated how much energy it takes to produce a solar cell, but you are absolutely right in pointing out its importance. Alfred North Whitehead says that every educated person should understand the second law of thermodynamics. If one, in addition,
undertands the concept of thermodynamic availability, one is in great position to call the hubris of producing liquefied fuels from low
quality Montana and Wyoming shale. It was Carter (an engineer that should have known better) that advocated this.
