Any expert on Iridium out there,

I have been keeping a keen eye on Motorola for quite some time. I like its current revenue to price ratio but dislike its earning. With the eventual write-off of the pager business, Motorola still faces a tough year ahead. However, I did very much like the Iridium Project until I read this month's (April'98 issue) of Scientific American.

On page 74, I was surprised to read that each satellite can only handle 1,100 simultaneous calls. Multiply that by a mere 66 total number of satellites gives only 67K simultaneous calls world wide. My gut feeling tells me that this network of satellites does not have enough capacity, and this whole $3.4B system is very much just like (no better than) a research project.

Any comments?

John.
