Drew, excellent post. Since long is the simpliest form of investment, I think it's a luck of understanding how the market works that makes some inexperienced investors hate short-sellers. Actually, I never heard of any shortplayer that "hate" longs, wants to kill them, sqeeze them, etc. People tend to forget that both short and long are 2 forms of investment, when people execute the same basic functions - buy and sell, only in different order. The real enemies of small investors are market makers and big speculators that have the ability to manipulate both price and media and often abuse this ability to suck money from small guys. You can avoid this by trying to understand what their game is and play accordingly.
