I think MS/DW was short a bunch of at-the-money put options that would expire in-the-money on' a lower opening (cash settlement option on morning opening rotation for the components of the underlying index). A lower opening would have cost them "huge" money so they did a nice arbitrage..trade $1,000,000.00 in fines for manipulation of 10 stocks in the index versus a potential liability on a $300 million program trade of at least 10X the fine!!!! BTW..loaded up some more LGOV this AM...
