I'm still here, but I have not been motivated to get into the middle
of discussions of who is screwing whom.

The modem example is not that good to demonstrate the advantages
of going to .25u since it essentially is still an audio (or a
very low frequency RF) frequency device. As a matter of fact, most
of the electronics industry is associated with devices that are
made in 'old' technologies, not .35u or .25u. Until recently the
best selling processor was the Zylog Z80. The imbedded market
still probably sells more eight bit processors than sixteen bit.
When a fab is no longer competitive with its leading edge products
it gets into a cash cow jellybean production mode. You don't trash
a billion dollars of equipment 'Just like that'. Last year, the
world semiconductor industry made about one hundred million
transistors for every man, woman, and child on the planet; the
only thing that humans made more of were printed characters. Most
of the volume was not at .25u.
