MEMC news:

ST. PETERS, Mo.--MEMC Electronic Materials
Inc. said here it has grown silicon crystal ingots that
are completely free of agglomerated defects.

The defects have long occurred in silicon ingots as
a result of the agglomeration of lattice vacancies or
silicon interstitial atoms during the growth process.
As the feature size and line widths of chips became
smaller and smaller, these defects in the original
silicon material could cause performance problems
and shorts in the IC's operation.

Robert Falster, director of MEMC silicon materials
research, said the defect problem became acute
with the arrival of the 256-megabit DRAM
generation and logic chips requiring similar small
feature sizes.

MEMC was able to grow the agglomerated
defect-free ingots, which it calls Perfect Silicon,
using an exteremely sensitive processing techniques
for which it has patents pending. Commercial
quantities of new, polished 150-mm wafers and
test quantities for 200-mm wafers are available
now. The company said 300-mm Perfect Silicon
wafers are under development.
