Any more, companies like Dell rely on, and buy from only proven vendors that have for years demonstrated the ability to deliver quality, reliable product, in volume, on time. A couple of new paradigms in the 1980's and 1990's are "just in time" and "dock to stock". The first means companies do just what it says, they buy only what and when they need to build to fill their customers' orders. The latter means they take what is shipped to them and move it directly to stock, with no test, just possibly incoming inspection.
I'm not saying a company like Dell won't build a few systems around the latest and greatest microprocessors, like Deschutes now, and run all their software against them and try to break them. Of course they will. But they will thoroughly test only a few. For the production ones, a simple boot up of Windows 95 and NT will probably suffice.
