David, 95% of MM's never take a position in a stock one way or another. They make their money (I have a friend, a MM and he's made over $1mil so far this year) by bringing in a stock (call it borrowing), knowing that there is a buyer who will pay .25 .30c more that he/she borrowed it for, (sometimes even more) and just reverse this for the short/put.
The good news is Cymer,asmlf,dpmi,etec, vtss and I forgot the other few are back in favour with the street.
Big bucks to be made here, if you can appreciate Wall Street's greed.
