DHCP protocol is an extension to BOOTP protocol, which was introduced
as a standard in September 1985, see
funet.fi . The authors of the
standards document are from Stanford University and Sun Microsystems,
and it was used to boot diskless unix workstations and other network
components either because they had no local storage or it just was
easier to configure the boot parameters centrally.
