I can't agree that anyone who "loses" a position due to a margin call is an experienced or informed investor. Just a greedy fool with too much money, and no vision of the possible downside. Margin enhances returns either way, and one must use stops if one wants to continue to play. An experienced and informed investor also does not blame external forces for "losing" a position. The only correct margin position would have been sustainable to true support at 2 1/16. Yes, you can't go 50/50 at 5 or 6 on that, but you won't lose your stake either. Pigs get slaughtered.

Why in the world would anyone have continued to hold this stock after the 3/5/98 conference call, especially on max margin?

Your friends are probably lucky though, at least they'll not be holding when the final bell rings.
