IBM in "E-business" Pact With China Telecom
NEW YORK (Reuters) - IBM said it has reached an agreement with China Telecom
to bring online commerce to China, showing once again that the Internet knows no
borders or boundaries.

Through the joint initiative, IBM said it will provide technology and services to
strategic sites in China that will allow, for example, international companies to more
easily conduct business online by connecting their local offices in China to others
around the world.

The agreement also calls for collaboration in areas such as building an electronic
commerce "infrastructure" for China Telecom customers that will make possible the
online identification, certification and payment security needed for an electronic
commerce network.

The companies said they plan to jointly develop other technology-based products and
services for China's telecommunications industry and also agreed to cooperate on a
number of business and technical exchanges.

In a joint statement, Leng Rongquan, deputy director of China Telecom, said the
companies have already begun building pilot projects. A spokeswoman for IBM
declined to comment on the financial terms of the deal.
