1. Microsoft seems to think that browsers pose a real threat to the their OS monopoly. In fact the way they talk they believe there is potential for the browser to render the Windows OS obsolete. How can this be ? I thought that browsers still require an OS to run on top of. Therefore a browser on its own would be useless.

If application code is downloaded from the net, you don't need a bloated OS on your machine. If your machine doesn't have to worry about managing a hard drive, this eliminates a lot of the OS code that can live in the browser.

2. How does Java actually work ?

Programs are compiled to the hardware they are to run on. A compiler for a Unix machine compiles a C program to assembly code that is very machine dependant. Java compiles its programs to generic bytecode, and when it is downloaded from the net the JVM compiles it to that machines platform. Each machine (browser) has its own JVM.

3. Are Java programs really compatible across all platforms ? i have heard various accounts.

The code runs the same. 1 + 1 = 2 on all machines. However, it is very hard to have the user interface look the same on all platforms.
