MCI to equip routes with advanced Lucent fiber <Picture: --------------------------------------------------------->By John Rendleman, PC Week Online 04.15.98 10:05 am ET <Picture> <Picture><Picture>
MCI Communications Corp. (MCIC) next Monday will announce plans to install its first TrueWave fiber-optic cables from Lucent Technologies Inc. on two network routes.
The TrueWave fiber is the most advanced optical cabling available on the market today, MCI officials said, enabling data to be transmitted more efficiently and over greater distances.
The two routes will be installed between the Arizona cities of Wittman and Phoenix and in Cleveland, Ohio. They will carry voice, data and Internet traffic as part of MCI's local and long-distance services, MCI officials said.
According to the companies, the Lucent TrueWave fiber was designed for long-haul networks operating in the 1530 to 1565 nanometer optical transmission range using both optical amplifiers and wave-division multiplexing equipment.
Because the cabling supports advanced optical amplifiers and WDM systems, light signals cover greater distance at higher speeds without degradation, said Lucent officials in Murray Hills, N.J.
MCI operates its current network backbone at up to 80 gigabits per second, and the new fiber will allow the company to carry even more traffic as bandwidth demands rise through the installation of higher capacity WDM technologies, said MCI officials in Washington.
