Peter,

No doubt that DVD will take off in PC sector sooner than consumer electronic sector but it will take off before DVD-Recorder becomes affordable. Expect the market share of DVD titles climb significantly in 1998.

Yes, DVD recordable media will be expensive at first, I think it will cost at least $15/ea. The driving force of DVD is not the recorder but when most publishers ship titles in DVD format. As long as copy-protection problem is solved (it is), they will support it because it is cheap to manufacture.

There is not much reason for DVD to replace CD-DA as to LD, but any DVD-ROM or DVD-Player should also play CD-DA and VCD. Backward compatible will be the key success factor for DVD to take off, especially in Asia where VCD is very popular.

>> I don't think it needs to be recordable in PCs, since the DVD readers are backwards compatible with CDs, and are a good replacement as the trend goes forward. <<

Correct! Anyway DVD-RAM is available. Actually the technology for DVD-Recorder (VHS) is also available but too expensive for average home user.

In previous post, I see a comment mentioned that "DVD movie on PC is bad". This is true because scaling is needed, if you playback the movie in 1:1 ratio, the picture will be perfect.
