SOrry-I didn't mean to differentiate between sexes. (It's the old grammatical problem of using he or she or the incorrect they)
ALL 13 year olds are only taking their first steps into the adult world. They are neither emotionally nor financially nor intellectually ready to enjoy all the privileges that go with being an adult, and they haven't enough experience or perspective to understand the ramifications of the sex act, emotional or healthwise. Saying "as long as we make sure they use protection" is, in my admittedly conservative opinion, a complete abdication of parental responsibility. Why would we approve this behavior until a young person is mature enough in all ways to fully understand it and its possible consequences?
Maybe you and I view the act itself in so different a way that we're disagreeing about two completely different things?
To me sex should not be separate from love, from caring, from respect, from emotional commitment. It's not an isolated biological function to be indulged as if they were dogs. When they take that step, they should be ready for it on all levels.

What did you think of the 14 year old's parents not being upset? I think this is an appalling statement about them and their values. For parents to accept the illegitimate child of their 13 year old, for a 13 to be taken to a brothel by an adult, all of these types of things are nothing more than ADULTS taking the responsibility of the act. It teaches the child nothing. And for these people to say (as I think I read) that they weren't upset-- that the teacher was a "nice" woman. --my god, I was incensed. This "nice woman" violated so many professional, if not her own personal, ethics, it leaves me reeling. The parents should have been furious!!!
Oh dear, I know, I'm in the minority and that my stance is on the side of conservative (!), but I really believe this.
