PC Cards From Eight Vendors Affected By 3Com Download

By Todd Wasserman, Computer Retail Week

At least eight different laptop vendors have had their PCcard modems adversely affected by 3Com's V.90 download, a 3Com spokeswoman said late Tuesday.
3Com 3Com removed the download from its website Friday to address user reports that it made their modems inoperable. Jef Graham, vice president and general manager of 3Com's mobile communications division, said Tuesday that laptops from Dell Computer appeared particularly vulnerable.

Rich Redelfs, vice president of marketing for 3Com's mobile computing division, also said Tuesday that about 20 people out of about 4,500 who downloaded the code reported their flash ROM was voided by the download, disabling the modem. In each case, the customers owned 3Com PC card modems. No desktop modems have been affected, he said.

The 3Com spokeswoman said the company does not yet know how many PC cards were damaged or how many laptop brands were affected.

Customers who experience problems after downloading the V.90 are directed to call 1-800-LAPTOPS, 3Com's help line
