Networking solution to be supplied to Cable & Wireless plc

Newbridge Networks Corporation NNC
Shares issued 173,670,862 Apr 14 close $37.45
Wed 15 Apr 98 News Release
Mr Paul Goyette reports
Newbridge Networks has been selected to supply Cable & Wireless plc with a
networking solution for its new CityVoice Express and CityData Express
services. The initial value of the contract is two million pounds sterling
and is forecast to grow to 20 million pounds sterling over the next two
years.
The contract extends Cable & Wireless's existing commitment to the
Newbridge 3600 MainStreet Bandwidth Manager, which is already deployed in
the Cable & Wireless Global Digital Highway. The solution guarantees
exceptional voice quality through the use of LD-CELP and A-CELP voice
compression algorithms. CityVoice Express and CityData Express are part of
Cable & Wireless' worldwide backbone network, called the Global Digital
Highway.
The CityVoice Express and CityData Express networks presently cover six
cities and, upon completion at the end of August 1998, will link 241 key
financial centers across 17 European cities. The 3600 MainStreet Bandwidth
Manager will be installed in these financial centres to ensure that
superior quality voice services can be rapidly provided on-demand to
financial institutions. The network is scalable and ready to be upgraded to
an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) capability. Last week Cable & Wireless
and Newbridge announced an agreement whereby the industry-leading
MainStreetXpress network switching and associated management software,
including the Siemens/Newbridge MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switch
and MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager, have been selected by Cable &
Wireless and its international subsidiaries' ATM networks.
Cable & Wireless plc is one of the world's leading providers of
international telecommunications services, whose businesses provide over 15
million customers in over 70 countries with a complete range of
international, domestic and mobile communication. Cable & Wireless plc is
the world's third largest carrier of international traffic, provides mobile
communications in 30 countries and operates the world's largest, most
advanced cable ship fleet.
