Douglas,

Let's hope so. You probably know it is not possible to find any evidence of fibre channel activity on the Litton site. You do find this press release on TASC:

littoncorp.com

This is probably a good indication of how vigorously they are going after the military defense business. There are a few more variables in Ancor's favor:

1. They have already announced an interest and a collaborative effort with Litton.

2. We have already discussed the military initiative for off the shelf products for their IT systems and Ancor products are plug and play.

3. Military purchasers are less cost conscious than typical network managers.

4. The data transfer requirements are probably huge and also complex. They are actually pretty similar to the data collecting requirements of the laboratory LANs I have posted here before. I think the main difference is that if you are using the data for real time applications from multiple sensors - you will need higher throughput and low latency - hopefully a quarter gig switch will not be enough. Some labs actually use FCAL for detectors where they do not need a lot of bandwidth.

5. A secure LAN/SAN with secure data is easily set up with FC. FC wins in the storage area hands down. I am waiting to win the Powerball tonight - so I can install my own SAN in the basement. It will hold the full text of all my books and journals so my wife will be able to convince me to throw all of the hard copies away. The MKII will sit over by the furnace....

On the other hand there are also several negatives. There are competing LAN technologies. Some labs have implemented large ATM (Fore) networks. FC will be at a disadvantage at the LAN/WAN interface unless there is an available high performance ATM/SONET to FC device. There is also the critical wireless to LAN environment which I know nothing about. Some of the other contractors in the release use FC for backup only.

We need more solid data on this issue. I am still digging.
