You're an engineer? Here's a simple question...

This is one I've NEVER received a good answer for...

Since the dawn of the age of computing, countless numbers of applications have been written that account for all sorts of date calculations. There are countless numbers of applications that exist now which "look forward" as well as "look backward" past century date boundaries - for example, the social security administration sends checks to people born in 1899...banks and financial institutions deal with countless instruments (such as bonds, mortgages, etc. etc.) with exposure to the dreaded 21st century dates.

What exactly is so magical about New Year's day - 1/1/2000? If we are going to experience significant impact from this "crisis", then why haven't these cataclysms occured now or in the past?
