Rusty,

You should be able to boot into DOS/95/Linux via the LILO (boot manager) that comes with Linux, however if you feel safer and don't mind spending the money then do it the way your buddy knows how.
I used to boot NT/DOS/Linux using LILO, but then I figured out how to make the NT boot manager do it. Also, you can always put LILO on a floppy disk and boot to Linux when the floppy is in the drive.
