Channel check: CompUSA, Arlington, Tx.

IOM is looking better after 3 months of depressing channel checks. I don't know about sales, but here are my impressions.

For months, CompUSA has been the home of the $150 Zip. It has been a frustrating sight. Today I saw a display of retail boxed ATAPI Zips for the first time. Though they had no price on them, a clerk looked it up and she said they are $99. This is very good news. I asked her to get a sign on them since one would naturally assume they were priced the same as the nearby $150 SCSI and PP externals. If CompUSA is selling them for $99, I wonder how low they are mail order. And now that ATAPIs are in retail boxes, I expect their sales will pick up. Note though, that the box has words to the effect that one should have intermediate level PC experience before trying to install - probably since you must open the cover and play with your ribbon cables. I would hope they have a decent users manual.

IOM has presence in 4 places. SYQT only has presence at the back wall.

When I mentioned to the clerk that SparQ was coming on strong trying to usurp Zip, she volunteered that they were getting a lot of returns on SparQ. She could not quantify though.
