It seems that Browsers pose more of a threat to their Application software business than their OS business. is this correct ?

It probably goes both ways. It is a paridigm shift. If an app can run on any OS then their could conceivable be a very cheap/"free" OS that comes with your Net PC, possibly imbedded. Applications aren't tied to an OS, which it what gives MS their monopoly. People buy applications not OS's
