Hawkeye - sorry to leave you hanging yesterday with my "more later" comment. I didn't have time to say any more at the time. Anyway, here's the rest of the story.

RBC Dominion Securities recently hosted a Technology and Telecommunications Conference where Ballard was one of the invited participants. The following is a summary of Ballard's comments at that Conference as prepared by RBC.

"Firoz Rasul, Chairman and CEO, discussed the progress the Company has made so far in commercializing its fuel cell technology. Ballard indicated that a cost-effective alternative to the internal combustion engine is likely some years away (2003 - 2005), and that current costs are roughly 10 times higher than the current cost of internal combustion engines. The Company's direction is to develop the complete automobile drive train, in partnership with established automotive OEM's such as Ford, Daimler-Benz and GM. The Company's technology is also suitable for stationary power plants. Telecommunications providers will likely want to deploy the technology to provide uninterrupted power to their networks. The Company expects 1998 will include a significant number of partnership and product announcements."

I think the last two sentences are significant and very much in keeping with their previously stated objective of commercializing their products in the following order:
First - Portable applications
Second - Stationary power plants
Third - the Fuel Cell Automobile

I look forward to hearing more about the proposed new partnerships.
