You have to decide what you want Michael. Do you want free thinkers in a healthy democratic society? If so then you don't want the kind of rigid society Singapore has. When you encourage free thinking you often get bad behavior. I think the two things may be inseparable. Hence the combination of wonderful and horrible things that came out of the sixties. Out of democratic anarchy emerges the best and the worst- I am not sure you can have one without the other. If you are willing to give up your freedom, you can have more safety. If you are willing to give up your money, you can have a more equal society. etc etc.

And as for using violence against one's own children, I can only speak for myself when I say I would use it in self defense but I would never assault them for any "crime." Of course I would punish them. I might even commit them to a facility if they had drug or alcohol problems, but a beating seems to me a useless activity. What does it teach? That I am willing to break the child abuse laws because I am so upset by what they have done? Doesn't that diminish me as a human being if my child can cause me to do something like that to them? Wouldn't they be in control if they were able to cause me to beat them? And this assumes that a child that out of control would let you beat them, and wouldn't beat you back. If you are violent with your children why shouldn't they be violent back? And many children are.
