<<NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 16, 1998--
Virtual Ribbon-Cutting in New York, Los Angeles, Austin will
celebrate our nations first new transcontinental network in more
than a decade
IXC Communications (NASDAQ:IIXC) will demonstrate its new coast-to-coast fiber optic network - the first completed by any carrier in more than a decade - tomorrow in a live, three-city virtual ribbon cutting beginning at 2 p.m. Eastern from the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.
To illustrate the networks high-speed, high-bandwidth multimedia capabilities, IXCs president and CEO Ben Scott will establish a live video link between the festivities in New York, the companys corporate headquarters in Austin, Texas and the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles. Those unable to attend can view the event live over the Internet by visiting IXCs web site at www.ixc-comm.com by 1:00 p.m. Eastern.
IXCs demonstration is significant because it shows our customers and the industry that the newest, fastest and most advanced fiber network is ready for business, coast-to-coast, said Scott. Utilizing state-of-the-art technologies, our network provides customers with a solution to fulfill all their business communications needs, including high-speed data, video, Internet access and voice over IP.
Last week, IXC became the first carrier to light a new coast-to-coast fiber optic network segment since the late 1980s. The New York-to-Los Angeles segment is part of the companys overall planned network which, when completed next year, will cover more than 20,000 digital route miles. The high-speed SONET-based pipeline incorporates the latest optronics equipment and is powered by the industry leading Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress multi-service platform capable of supporting multiple traffic types on a single infrastructure. The result is a network engineered to meet the worldwide demand for bandwidth intensive applications like distance learning, e-commerce, the Internet and telemedicine.
