A lot of it could be longs hedging to lock in gains. Another theory is that a portion of the short sales stemmed from forward sales from company insiders. In the last several years, investment banks have increasingly devised ways for insiders to access the value of their stakes without actually selling the shares. Often, the brokerages essentially buy out executives with a loan that the executives pay back in stock. Then the brokerage goes out and shorts the common to lock in the spread. >>
