think morality needs to evolve out of consensus

Alex, I am surprised at you for making a statement that is so easily penetrated with the greatest of ease. Like shooting ducks in a barrel, (thought you might like that analogy <g>)

But seriously, The KKK and much of the South that sympathized with them had a morality from a general consensus and we all know where that left the Black American. Racism is a morality that evolves from a consensus everywhere it is found. What you and I call immoral the KKK and their ilk regarded as quite moral. Need I speak of the brutality of the Nazis against the Jews and other ethnic races. The communists and the Ukrainians or capitalists. The Holy Roman Empire and the Moslems. The Irish Catholics and the Protestants. OOPS I guess I just did didn't I? Point being, like Jhild said, you end up with moral relativism or situational ethics. At that point it the twisted version of the golden rule. Them what's got the gold makes the rules.

So, consensus is exactly the wrong way to arrive at morality.
