That is similar to the term "all nine yards", or "the whole nine yards" story, in the respect that they are both the result of combat.

Watched some show on TV one night where an expert on these kind of things described the middle finger thing (same as you provided) as well as many other common terms and their true origins.

"Give em' all nine yards" was an expression that gunners on US fighter planes used in WWII when they were planning on using the entire standard 27 feet of rounds (strips) that would/could feed through the machine gun's chamber.

The show was actually pretty fascinating. I was surprised by a great many of this man's long/well-researched findings...
