The following letter concerning Jaz just appeared on the Roland mailing list. It responds to a question that was asked about using the Jaz drive.

Chris,

Be aware that Roland discontinued use of internal Jaz drives on their VS880 line. The reason was a very high failure rate of Jaz cartridges. On the VS880 mailing list there is story after story of people using the Jaz drive without problem for months, then losing the drive altogether without warning. (I have personal experience with Jaz failure on an external SCSI unit. I was one of the people saying the hysteria was over-hyped until I lost 2 recording sessions
to a failure.)

Although Roland still endorses the Zip drive for backup, both Roland and E-Mu have withdrawn all endorsement for the Jaz drive. You'll hear plenty of endorsements from people having success, but I would have been one of those people until December.
Regards,
Dan
