>>The acquisition of Borland would fill a HUGE gap in IBM's product line<<

This is the bit that puzzles me. What gap? In the development space, IBM seems right now to be putting its weight behind its Visual Age family of products. It has its own CORBA based stuff, even its own deployment management product. If they have a billion dollars of loose change to chuck around, why on earth would they spend it on buying Borland? Even Oracle [buying Borland, that is] makes more sense than this.

Stranger things have happened, of course. But mostly they get reported in the National Inquirer.
