patents used to get 17 from the issue date. Patents now get 20 years from the date of filing. Patents issued under the old law, and still in force, get the longer of 17 years from the issue date, or 20 years from the filing date. The patent was filed January 10, 1983, and issued July 9, 1985. It has until 2003. You cannot renew patents.
