Your wife is pretty savvy - most of my senior contacts at CPQ say that the general strategy to move to a services oriented business, decrease percentage of sales from HW, were in place since mid 1994, and that DEC was the vehicle to accomplish that, they were waiting for the right time in terms of CPQ organization, cash position, and DEC assets. IMO CPQ has executed well to this strategy and is now the best positioned of the big computer companies, but may take another 6 months to really build a head of steam.
