According to the series of articles featured in the latest issue of the Scientific American magazine, Iridium is designed for voice, just like the old fashioned phone line. The data communication system, which is still on the drawig board, has a code name of Celestri which calls out for 63 LEO and 9 GEO (geosynchronous) satellites.
