Well, OI is just the number of "open" contracts. Just like yesterday there is no effective way for me to know what the case is, though you can figure it a little if you know yesterday's volume and the change in OI today from yesterday.

Since today, for trading purposes, is the last day, by tomorrow all options will be reconciled, so OI will be effectively 0 tomorrow afternoon. With 9K contracts open and a volume of 4K we can't really tell without knowing more whether this represents new contracts opening up to make the OI say 13K, or whether these are open contracts "closing" so someone can leave early for the weekend say, leaving the OI at around 5K. If I were to guess, I would go for the latter.

When you have no position, buying a contract creates an open interest. When you sell that contract, you are closing it and the OI goes back down. The OI is the measure of just what it implies - open contracts.
