TELUS ENDS DISCUSSION WITH AT&T

EDMONTON, April 17 /CNW/ - TELUS Corporation (TSE: T), the Alberta
communications company, today announced an end to the discussions with AT&T
with respect to a possible business combination.
TELUS president and CEO George K. Petty stated that the companies were
unable to reach agreement on certain key issues and that discussions have been
terminated.
''Important issues could not be resolved in the best interests of our
shareholders. TELUS remains committed to its growth strategy,'' said Petty.
''We will continue to improve shareholder value through growth in our areas of
expertise and strength.''
TELUS Corporation has 10,600 employees, primarily in Alberta. It is the
principal supplier of communications, local and long distance service in the
Province of Alberta. In 1997, it bad $4.2 billion in assets and revenues of
$2.0 billion. The company is listed on the Toronto, Montreal and Alberta
exchanges.
