Ok. My company is just finishing a parallel port
hot-pluggable cable modem which can be installed
by any user in the home in less that 5 minutes ...
that's the design goal and we've made it so.

The cable co's rate limiter is caused by the fact
that (until now) cablemodems have used 10baseT
connectors ... and required a netcard in the PC.
Putting a LAN card in a PC is estimated to take
30-120 minutes ... crack the case, scope out the
IRQs, etc, etc ... PnP is a "sometime" thing.

Our modem doesn't ... you just plug it into the
printer port, Windows asks for the driver disk,
and away you go.

That's just an example ... there will be cablemodems
using other non-NIC interfaces that are hot-pluggable:
USB, 1394, even IRDA are possibilities.

The modem referred to above was announced at the last
Western show ...
