Here's an option-trading question from a newbie.

I bought protective puts on one of my stocks, and they expired today in the money. (Actually, I tried to close the position but couldn't before the close of market).

Is it normal to have these automatically exercised, or do I need to explicitly inform my broker to do so? What's the time limit (I know it's usually by the Monday following expirations )?
