For the past few days, I've been reading plenty from "Stockman" ranting and raving about Cisco and the ATT outage. A few thoughts:

1. Cascade/Ascend switches have been involved in similar outages

2. Companies like Bay and 3Com don't offer ATM/FR WAN switches. They don't play in this area. Any outage of Cisco/Ascend equipment isn't very material to folks like Bay/3Com.

3. Telcos absolutely love it when their suppliers are willing to take the bullet for them. Whether the fault lies with ATT, Cisco, or both, the way Cisco handled the crisis speaks volumes, and will probably prove beneficial in the long run. Look at Wall Street's (lack of) reaction. The Stratacom and Ascend switches are bleeding edge technologies. The fact that these outages happen from time to time are unfortunate and costly, but in the end it only proves how crucial the technology is to today's economy. And if you look at the playing field, Cisco is well-positioned across the line to benefit from the increasing importance of this technology. Also-rans like Bay don't even play in key areas.
