Isn't it a bad sign when we start valuing a company
on the basis of its investment in the stock of other
companies? Sure capital should not sit idle while it
can earn a return, but surely this should be a sideline
to the main business of a going concern.

Furthermore, I think this applies equally to a company
"investing" in its own stock - ie. the buyback program.
Sure it might be good in the short term for shareholders
(a group including highly placed company insiders), but
in the long term isn't this just throwing away capital
that may be badly need in the near future - say Slot 1
is a flop, Intel will need all the cash it can get its
hands on to cut its losses and fastrack a new processor
direction - this isn't farfetched; there are many people
who believe Intel has managed to miss an 'inflection point.'
