***Contest Picks. NEW! The Karma Index***

Thank God, I -- or rather, Telescan's Macro*World Price Forecasts -- lost the last contest thunderously. Imagine predicting that the internet stocks were due for a major correction! Anyway, Telescan's "mathematical formula" has covered itself with shame.

Time now for my -- ahem! ahem! -- ALL-NEW proprietary model: The KARMA INDEX.

It is well known, of course, that some people have "good karma" and some have "bad karma." The same thing is true of STOCKS. Good/bad karma has nothing to do with a stock's present virtues, but everything to do with its virtues in a past existence, which carry over in an incomprehensible way into the present.

There were a lot of candidates for top karma status, but just to be different I have chosen Newpark Resources.

Thus:

LONG: NR.

There are plenty of candidates for "bad karma," including those I own myself (ESV,TDW). However, I don't wish to jinx myself by nominating my own stocks to win in the "short" category. Besides, TDW may reverse its fortunes by offering up its usual positive earning surprise next week. That leaves, however, plenty of candidates, including MIND -- which is NOT on the Yahoo list. I thought of nominating TBDI, but that poor stock is SO undervalued that somebody may just figure it out. So, here goes:

SHORT: DALY

If I don't win this contest, I shall clearly have to revise/update/modify my KARMA INDEX. Stay tuned.
