Alan,

Abraham was the father of many nations and he was called a Hebrew. Jacob had twelve sons one of whom was called Judah, his descendents possessed the land of Caanan and called it after his name.

Years later in the land of Judah King David conquered the city of Jerusalem, which up to that time had stood as a defiance. After it was conquered it became the capital of the whole southern kingdom. After the northern tribes were deported the land of Judah became known as the land of Jewry, because Jerusalem was it's capital, hence the inhabitants were called Jews.

The prophesy in genesis says of Judah. The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. This is Jesus Christ who was born a Jew.
