Well, maybe so .. but I have always understood 'Sephardim' to refer to the Jews of the Iberian Pen¡nsula, i.e. Spain and Portugal. 'Ashkenazim' refers to the Jews who migrated to the north, to Mitteleuropa, Russia, Western Europe, etc.
The two words 'sephardic' and 'semitic' don't sound alike, the 'f' sound is rarely interchangeable with the 'm' sound, but who knows? ... well, I bet Alan and Nancy and Yaacov know. Yaacov says he speaks Ladino, that is the language of the Sephardim (I think).
Yes, to make any relation between skin colour and religion would seem to me to be absurd ... but then there is so much absurdity around, so many beliefs so strongly held ... hard to know which to choose, eh
Maybe I'll just sit back and watch for a while, before picking one -g- |
