A goal behind the company's overall Java game plan is "to prevent Microsoft [Corp.] from gaining an office suite monopoly despite their anticompetitive practices," Cowpland said, "such as forcing PC manufacturers to bundle Word. Our goal is to prevent them from having anywhere near the monopoly in applications that they have in Windows."

His comments came during a keynote address at last month's Federal Office Systems Exposition in Washington.
