Manny - re: insurance "dark ages"
yeh, it's amazing that insurance companies 'just don't get it' when it comes to preventative actions vs. long term expenses. When my kids were younger they did cover fluoride, but wouldn't cover the sealants, which is an exceptionally good preventative technique for the molars.
I'm vaguely aware that often times the healthcare coverage is based on the critieria the contracting company establishes for coverage. Hence, some company's coverage is outstanding and others are barely adequate. It's not all the same. By not covering certain procedures, companies set healthcare biases for the people who can afford it (not cool IMO).
Big companies benchmark and compare their healthcare benefits to let their employees know that they're 'competitive', 'better', or 'best'; or they offer a suite of options to pick and pay for. Also, health care insurance companies use statistical models for what is cost efficient. If they haven't plugged in the values for some of the new techniques then they don't see a profile for what they could be saving.
I wonder where Al Gore is on some of these health care issues. It'd be nice to see him get behind these, like he's behind the Internet!
