Dear Brian,
The foundries are currently Intel and IBM with a third new foundry likely to be added. Incidently, as there have been some
bearish insinuations as to the future effect on QC's ASIC business from the entry of new players like LSI Logic and DSP Communications, let's not forget that QC willingly licensed these new sources, and most importantly, those royalty rates payable are not in the low single digits but more likely in the 25% - 30% range.Furthermore ASIC chips are not commodity-like DRAM chips. Qualcomm works closely with its respective ASIC customers to deliver product uniquely suited to that customer's requirements. That customer in turn effectively builds a manufacturing process around that ASIC. The decision to therefore "switch" ASIC suppliers becomes quite problematic for the handset manufacturer.
regards.
John
