Tipsy, I also find the "look over the valley" comment funny, especially when a pothole causes so many folks to consider slitting their wrists. It reminds me of 18 year olds going to war, and that includes me, back a lot longer than I care to remember. Most want to be heroes and only think about what damage they can do to the enemy. But once they find out that the enemy has a real concern for their lifespan, and that there are other enemies like lousy camp food and sleeping on the ground in areas that are infested by bugs, the enthusiasm dampens. I think everyone plans to be brave and buy during the crash as long as it doesn't happen. <G> But as soon as they see some folks at the office receive pink slips and hear they may be next, the courage to spend what money they do have on Microsoft wanes. CDs suddenly seem like an intelligent choice again.
And, as I have said many times, the generation that won big in WWI was turned coward by the 1929 crash. The folks who defeated Hitler and Tojo were craven during the 1974 crash. I don't think the generation that surrendered in Vietnam, my age group, is likely to be more heroic. MB |
