I'm guessing that the BIG news is somehow related to this??

[From 1997 Annual Report)
The Company is aware of the potential issues associated with the programming code in existing computer systems as the year 2000 approaches. The primary issue is whether or not computer systems will properly recognize date-sensitive information when the year changes to 2000. Systems that do not properly recognize such information could generate erroneous data or cause the system to fail. Management does not anticipate that the Company will incur either significant operating expenses or significant capital expenditures to be year 2000 compliant with respect to both its internal systems and the software tools that it markets. In fact, the Company's software tools and services could be utilized by HIE's customers and prospects to enable their systems to become year 2000 compliant.
