Hal, MSFT has punished shorts since when.. in 95 it had a smoothe run up through the spring/summer, again in 96, in 97 it was rumored to be in trouble but came through and anyone short got demolished.. see chart:http://www.iqc.com/chart/default.asp?period=180&time=week&chart=candle&chart1=bb&volume=y&rsi=y&stochastics=y&momentum=y&symbol=msft

the same sort of rumoring is afloat as in the article.. my opinion after looking at the whole picture is that MSFT is so entrenched as THE player in software and such a substantial entity that its synonymous with the pc and server sector.. meaning if you think computers are a good place for money, then MSFT has to have some of it.

Is it Very short term overbought relative to a potential earnings dissapointment and justice department? yes, but it could go the other way also.. here's a scenario that could really hurt if you were short. the company breaks up into systems and applications divisions. Those holding current stock get shares in each new company and perhaps a third company devoted to media/internet. Such an opportunity would be a windfall to investors.

I'm not shorting it, there are better targets.

Jim
